Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide participants with a small ensemble experience to contrast their large ensemble playing, help develop their ability to make music without a conductor, and to expose them to music written specific for horns. During the course of the semester, the ensemble will prepare for a recital performance. Expectations: Each week, the student will be assigned a specific part to a piece that is scheduled for that particular class. Students are expected to practice their assigned parts to the best of their ability and listen to any recordings that are provided. It is an expectation that students come to class with a basic knowledge of their part and the ability to play through it with minimal problems so class time can be spent working aspects of ensemble playing. Attendance: Due to the participatory nature of the class, one student’s absence will affect the quality of the class for all. Therefore, unexcused absences will not be allowed, with the exception of certain extenuating circumstances that will be reviewed on a case by case basis. If a student knows in advance that s/he will need to miss class, please discuss this immediately with the instructor. Requests for excused absences will be considered on a case by case basis. If an absence request is approved, that absence will not affect the student’s grade. Grading: A student’s grade will be a reflection of both their attendance and the quality of their participation (i.e. level of preparation). An unexcused absence will drop a student’s grade by one letter. Students will receive high marks for participation by having practiced their part and having listened to the assigned piece(s). Approved absences will not affect the student’s grade. Syllabus: A printable copy of the course syllabus including the information available below.
